The effects of new technologies on world/ethnic and popular music Music through out the world has been affected by technology. New technologies such as the internet, have enabled artists from across the globe to work with each other by simply e-mailing files and downloading the music contained in them. People are able to hear music that they might never have heard by listening to it on the internet. People are not restricted from experiencing new music, due to economic or geographical restraints, anymore as music can be downloaded for free of the internet. Because there is such easy access to new music it gives opportunity for cross-genres and new ideas to come forward. It makes musical collaborations with someone on the other side of the world possible without having to be physically near them. So now, different types of music are heard around the world and interpreted differently to suit each persons environment. Electronic music is a genre of music that has always been able to find an audience through out the world because of its ability to connect without being associated with one place in particular and its ability to be appreciated regardless of race, sex, religion or social status. With the house music explosion in the early 90s and late 80s, people began to use computers more and more to make music. The popularity of the music meant it spread far and wide beyond its origins in Chicago, U. ... Before 1986, house music was practically unheard of. ... (Although, with many super clubs, like creamfields and gatecrasher having to shut their businesss down, the economic prosperity once enjoyed by the major cheese merchants has begun to look shaky) The mass acceptance of house music could be looked at as being contradictory, hypocritical or just plain opportunistic when early sensationalised reports, by certain tabloid newspapers, of house being the devils music are looked at. Although this was also probably something to do with house musics association with the drug ecstasy, the people who had originated the music, originally had little or no idea of the connotations their music had to the drug.
