To Kill a Mockingbird
English-GCSE set text Harper Lee was indeed a good writer, of yet one book, "To kill a mockingbird", a story was a winner of many important book awards. ... It dawns on Jem by the end of the book, what society he is living in, one which is racist and unjust, which is why he feels that Tom Robinson has been let down by what he believed to be a community which in turn comes to be nothing but an unjust society, he is devastated that Tom Robinson has been so let down, he, as do all the individuals attending the court case know that Tom Robinson is not guilty and their is sufficient evidence to prove so, however the fact that it is unheard of for a black man to feel sorry for a white woman, which Tom declares he did for Miss Mayella Ewell, this is likely to be the reason for the verdict "Guilty as Charged" Tom Robinson is one of the metaphorical mockingbird figures in the story he only tries to help Mayella pure and simply out of the goodness of his heart and yet is punished for it.
