Emily Dickinson’s writing focuses mainly on the afterlife because she wanted to know if Heaven really does exist. Dickinson’s strong writing skills are composed of three distinct characteristics. First, Dickinson's beliefs from her childhood takes a great role in her writing. She wanted facts instead of beliefs so that she could prove her point. Secondly, she relies on God, religion, and faith in her writing. Lastly, Dickinson centers her writing around her poetry. Her poetry is what makes Dickinson very well-known throughout the literary world today(www.theatlantic.com). Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830. She lived in a mansion that was owned and shared between her father and her grandfather. Emily Dickinson’s father was Edward Dickinson, and his father was Samuel Fowler Dickinson. The grandfather built the house in 1813. The family had to share the house because they were not the wealthiest of people. However, the grandfather had to sell his share and move out of the house. The other family who bought his share was the David Mock family. Therefore, Emily was not allowed in most parts of her own home. In many ways, it was as if her parents were much like that of their house. She felt the separation from her home and her family. Emily Dickinson did not even feel a close relationship between herself and her own mother. She barely knew her.
