A brief biography on Alice Walker Walker was born on February 9, 1944 in a southern town called Eatonton, Georgia. ... In 1967 Walker married a Jewish civil rights attorney by the name of Melvin Leventhal. ... In 1968 Walker gave birth to a girl, Rebecca. Walker and Leventhal divorced in 1976. After the divorce Walker focused more on her writings and has taught at various universities. 2 Walker has published five novels including The Color Purple In 1970 Walker’s first novel was released, The Third Life of Grange Copeland. This book took it’s place as the introduction to Alice’s work. It showed what Alice’s work was to be about the domination of powerless woman by equally powerless men. Walker’s next novel was Meridian released in 1976. ... Walker’s third novel was released in 1982, The Color Purple. This novel made Walker a literary celebrity overnight. She won two awards for this novel, American Book Award, 1982 and Pulitzer Prize, 1983 (“Alice” 4). Walker received unanimous praise for The Color Purple. ...
