Can Biology be the Sole Cause of Some Aggressive Behavior in People? ... Imagine if a single gene caused people to commit murder, or if a slight shortage of one of the brain’s chemicals caused people to commit rape and arson. Scientists could isolate the genetic factors that predispose people to such violent behavior and put a stop to it before it began. Some research has indeed shown that while there is no specific evidence of a definite gene that can cause violence and aggression, there is a definite connection between having an inclination to violence and a shortage of serotonin (Lindee & Nelkin, p. ... The issue of whether this defect alone can cause violence is being hotly debated. ... Can this biological problem alone cause violence. ... It has been proven that the result can be very unpleasant; violent behavior erupts ( Lindee& Nelkin). ... Extra serotonin has been used as a treatment for violent behavior with a lot of success, for it helps sort out the messages going to the brain via nerve cells and therefore makes thinking more controlled ( Kelves & Kelves). This lends further support to the fact that a shortage of serotonin can lead to violent behavior. I draw this conclusion because if a person with violent behavior is given extra serotonin, and the violent behavior stops then there is only one real cause for the behavior.
It is not my opinion that this shortage of chemicals in the brain has no effect on behavior, I’m saying that a shortage may turn aggression into violence, but it is not the root cause of it. One reason I’m not inclined to think that a biological problem can be the sole cause of violence is that people are tired of crime and violence, and they would like an easy answer, like a biological defect, to explain it.
