Edgar allan Poe was a blend of two distinct and seemingly opposed personalitites. On one side the man himself and his writings seemed unbalanced and neurotic, so much that many readers ask if such work could have been done by the same man or whether Poe was not beside himself with drugs (He only took opiates commonly perscribed in his day), or with alcohol. ... ) One the other side, Poe appears as a cool thinker, with a keen, logical side. ... )
Poe is most famous as the first master of the short story form, especially tales of the mysterious and macabre.
