Beethoven at Heiligenstadt”
Just north of Vienna, on the Danube, Heiligenstadt was not only a quiet village where Dr. Johann Schmidt sent Beethoven to take refuge from his anxiety and distress in the May of 1802. Instead, it became a turning point in Beethoven’s life as he completed the Heiligenstadt Testament, revealing his most personal sufferings with his deafness and unbalanced moods. It was in this document in which Beethoven expressed disgust for himself and provided reasons for his neurotic personality.
It was not until the year 1801 that Beethoven discovered the first signs of his deafness as he wrote:
How often I wish you were here, for your Beethoven is having
a miserable life, at odds with nature and its Creator, abusing
the latter for leaving his creatures vulnerable to the slightest
accident . ...
For three years, Beethoven had been suffering with symptoms of deafness, alone and isolated.
