Major Paper Assignment
November 24, 2003
The works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, while pessimistic in character, also present the benevolence of man. Man’s kindly, well-meaning nature is central to each theme and plot Hawthorne presents. That benevolence that Hawthorne expressed is articulated through Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter, Father Hooper in “The Minister’s Black Veil”, and Georgiana in “The Birthmark”. ... This message is hidden deeply beneath the iniquity and graveness so prevalent in Hawthorne’s writing.
In what many consider to be Hawthorne’s greatest work, The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne, ostracized from the community for the sin of adultery, overcomes her social handicap to contribute to the community. ... Hawthorne also communicates the message of the goodness of the human heart, showing that nobility and compassion remain even in the soul of a sinner such as Hester.
