A person suffering from an identity crisis is constantly in search of their true self, but is unable to find it because the perception of who they are is jaded by the confusion and distractions of their life. ... The main character in the film Fight Club, Jack, fits the description of a person suffering from an identity crisis and this causes him to become disillusioned with life. The chosen filmic sequence of Fight Club introduces the audience to Jack’s dilemma and his countless attempts to remedy the situation. The film, Fight Club, exhibits the formal elements of cinematography, visual design, editing, sound, and literary design to showcase the people, circumstances, and events that eventually lead Jack to create an alter ego in response to the frustrations of his current hum drum existence. ... He uses a wide-angle lens to show close ups of Jack that give him a bloated and creepy appearance and make everyone who is in the background seem far away. He also inserts an extreme close-up of a Starbucks coffee cup to emphasize the enormous influence of corporations in the life of the average American such as Jack. Lastly, he uses shallow focus to
blur all the surroundings, so the audience will focus on Jack. The movement of the camera follows Jack’s point of view because it only focuses on the people that Jack looks at or the people that are physically near him. The first time others come into focus is when Jack attends his first group therapy session for testicular cancer. A shot-reverse shot occurs when Bob is telling Jack his sob story regarding his experience with testicular cancer. The camera focuses on Bob and then on Jack. It continues to alternate and it ends when Jack cries for the first time. The cinematography implies that in Jack’s reality everyone is blurry and appears far away because Jack sees only what he wants to see and that is himself.
