The neighbors are talking amongst themselves about justice and criminals when the head gardener, who is listening to their conversations, decides to tell them a story. His grandmother had told him the story a very long time ago. It is a story about a man named Thomson who is a doctor in the town. ... This story was written in 1894. Then at the end of the story when the judge doesn’t sentence the man to death he says, “No! ... The narrator’s grandmother, who originally told him the story, used to say, “…for such faith in humanity God forgave the sins of all the inhabitants of that town. ... This is important to the story because this was leading up to the time the story was written. ... The people in this story had very little to look forward to as the government was taking more and more away from them. ... “Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, considered the father of the modern short story and of the modern play, was born, the third of six children, in the Russian seaport town of Taganrog, near the Black Sea. ...
