Aim:-
My aim for this assignment is to explore the implications of this proposition for managing modern corporations in the most effective way:- Politics permeate organisations because organisations are collections of people who have differing past experiences, differing current circumstances and therefore potentially differing interests. ... This means when a whole group of different people are put together in one organisation, there is bound to be some differences of opinions and interests which will lead to conflict. Within in organisations, conflict can occur between departments, groups and individuals, and it can be caused by particular leadership styles, the exercise of power and politics and cultural changes.
‘It is seen as primarily the outcome of organisational politics, as individuals, groups units and departments attempt to influence the decisions that affect their own interests, usually at the expense of others’ (p.769, Organisational Behaviour, Hyczynski & Buchanan)
It maybe thought that conflict is a bad think causing arguments and falling outs between employees, but I believe that that is just a stereotype of conflict, because if people are civil and understanding enough, they will negotiate and compromise with each other to lead to a better understanding of each other. ... The first frame of reference in the Unitarist frame of reference, which sees organisations as essentially harmonious and any conflict as bad. ... This sees organisations as a collection of groups, each having their own interests, thus making conflict inevitable as every group tries to promote and pursue their own interests and objectives. ... 3) Making people more aware of real goals and interests. ...
Also Taffinder, who stated the advantages of functional conflict above believed that successful organisations created the conditions in which:-
‘conflict over how tasks should be performed was increased, while conflict over values was eliminated. ... Leadership style:- This is where organisations appoint managers who encourage non-traditional viewpoints instead of the authoritarian ones which are likely to suppress opposing view points and therefore reduce conflict. ...
Conclusion:- Overall the fact that, as the proposition by Hickson says:- ‘Politics permeate organisations because organizations are collections of people who differing past experiences, differing current circumstances and therefore potentially differing interests.’ I believe this is a good thing for organisations because different interests lead to differences of opinion and therefore conflict occurs, which if managed properly using some of the methods I have mentioned and kept at the ‘optimal’ or ‘functional’ level, can lead to the evolution of organisations, and will help them become more responsive to change, and therefore are more likely to survive .
