When thinking of war movies, one often thinks of bombs, explosions, blood, and gore. ... This is a mental war that goes on in the heads of every soldier on the battlefield. It doesn’t matter which war is being fought, where the location is, or even what time period you’re in. The moral struggles that go on are all very similar, and although they take the back seat to special effects and battle scenes in newer war films, they were the base of the storyline in many older movies. We can see these morals in three films that, on the surface, appear to have nothing in common besides War itself. ... Three films from the same era which are very different movies, but all have that moral similarity which war movies of that era share. We see reoccurring themes throughout the films, such as self-sacrifice, patriotism, friendship, family ties, and the idea of continuing to live your life while war is going on.
Many of the war films encompass all three themes. ... This film follows a British family’s first few months during World War II. This entire film focuses on the family’s life during the War, rather than on individual battles.
