Boram Ham The Power of the Battle Against the Evil A man has a never-ending battle against evil in the world. Such men like Cervantes and Don Quixote in the novel Man of La Mancha. In the novel, Cervantes constantly battles against evil and waits for his final battle. Similar to Cervantes, Don Quixote battles the evil for the virtue and right. Both of the characters prepares for the battle to the death against evil. As they constantly fight against evil, both characters become more encouraged for the battles. Further more, they become more acknowledge of the reality; also they become more aware of the facts in life. Thus, they gain more understanding of life and the way it should be lived to be happy. Therefore, In Man of La Mancha, Cervantes and Don Quixote¡¯s battle against evil strengthens them emotionally and psychologically. Before Cervantes¡¯s final battle with the inquisition, he faces another battle with the prisoners in the cell. At first Cervantes¡¯s purpose is to wait for his battle with the inquisition. So, Cervantes indicates that he must ¡°appear before the inquisition¡± for the heresy (8). Which means that he waits to have his battle against the unbeatable foe. However, before he counters with his final battle, Cervantes fights another battle in the cell to be innocence by the prisoners. As Duke implies to Cervantes that his ¡°purpose is to divert¡± the jury¡¯s mind (24). It is fact that he is battling the jury¡¯s opinion to be proven innocent, since the jury¡¯s verdict is guilty from the beginning. Cervantes requires fighting battles with evil to be prepared for his next challenge. Therefore, as Cervantes is challenged with more battles, he becomes emotionally prepared for his final battle with the inquisition. Similar to Cervantes, Don Quixote constantly battles against evil before his final combat. In the play that Cervantes performs, Don Quixote is constantly battling against his enemy. He is the ¡°knight errant and sally forth into the world to right all wrongs¡±(11). For Don Quixote, he is fighting an endless battle since there is never ending evil.
