1. Describe Holden as the “fumbling adolescent nauseated by the grossness of the world’s body.” There are many examples throughout the book that describes Holden as such. The world and most of the people in it, in general, disgust Holden. In the beginning of the book, Holden talks about “old Spencer.” Holden thinks highly of Spencer however, he can’t get over the fact that he’s an old man. Holden gets “depressed” when he sees all the medication and pills around Spencer’s room smells the Vicks Nose Drops. Spencer’s “bumpy chest” and “white and unhairy legs” also disgust him. Overall, Holden gets depressed when thinking about growing old and has a fear of someday looking the same as Spencer. This thought not only scares him, but also disgusts him and depresses him. It’s obvious that he struggles with the idea. Besides old Spencer, Holden is also nauseated by his roommates. Ackley has horrible acne and bad teeth that make Holden sick. Stradlater is a “secret slob.” Holden refers to him as a “secret slob” because although he appears to be clean, he in fact is not so. For example, Stradlater shaves which helps with to appear clean, however, he doesn’t clean up his whiskers after shaving which makes him a slob. People such as Spencer, Ackley, and Stradlater make up the “world’s body” and Holden cringes at this. He doesn’t want to accept this and it eats away at him making him “nauseated by the grossness of the world’s body.” 2. Explain how Holden is the embodiment… “of youth’s secret terrors, accumulated joys, and magnified agonies.” How does this explain his bravado? Holden is representative of “youth’s secret terrors” because of how he reacts to such things as sex, girls, aging, and even death. These are all “secret terrors” because they are all a part of life, however, unknown to people when they will occur. Holden would want nothing more than to avoid these things, however it’s impossible. A good example would be aging. People get older every day, however it goes almost unnoticed. It will be noticed when you look back on earlier times in life and then realize a great change has occurred in your appearance. And, because Holden is so terrified by aging, it’s even more of a terror to him. However, he does have “accumulated joys.” Some of his joys include dancing, smoking, drinking, and his red hat.
