Chris Elliott Mrs. Davidson Health – 4th period 6 November 2003 Ecstasy: a history and its effects First synthesized in 1912 by Merck Pharmaceuticals, Methylenedioxymethamphetamine also known as MDMA, ecstasy and a host of other names has only recently become a largely used drug. When Merck Pharmaceuticals first patented MDMA in 1914 it was to be used as an anti-depressant but was discontinued very shortly after. It wouldn’t be until 1953 when the army began to test MDMA on guinea pigs, rats, monkeys, etc. and determined that MDMA was less toxic than MDA, the current methamphetamine of the time. In 1967 the first “underground” batches of MDMA were synthesized but relatively few people used the drug, and there wouldn’t be a scholarly article on MDMA for ten years after that.
