Thank you very much for inviting me to speak to you today. I want to extend special thanks to Eduard Dijker and Art Blom from the Netherlands, and Suzanne Hammeth Christofferson from Denmark. These 3 members of ROTNAC very kindly answered some questions that I asked before writing this speech. Their responses helped me understand your orientation and I will be quoting from them to illustrate my points. First of all I would like to introduce myself. I have been a librarian for more than 30 years and have worked in libraries of all types, academic, public, special and school. Most of my experience has been in the United States, but I also worked in an academic library in England in the early 1970’s. Currently I am the Director of the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) in Wheeling, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago. NSLS is one of 12 multi-type library systems funded by the State of Illinois. Our mission is to provide leadership and facilitate cooperation that enhances the effectiveness of our member libraries. In 1999-2000, it was my pleasure to serve as President of the American Library Association.
