Doc Holliday was born in 1852, in Griffin, Georgia. His real name was John, but they called him Doc because he was a dentist. John was a good dentist but it was discovered that he had contracted tuberculosis. His doctors said he had only months to live but might add on some months if he moved to a dry climate. He moved west. He tried to be a dentist in Dallas, Texas, but he soon found his disease would not able him to continue. He had to find a different way to make a living. Doc found he had a natural ability to gamble and this is how he made his money. He knew he would have to protect himself because gambling was a dangerous occupation. So he practiced shooting a six- gun and fighting with a knife. On January 2, 1875, Doc got into an argument resulting in a gunfight. Both missed their target and they both were arrested. A few days later he got into another fight and was forced to leave. He moved to Jacks County. He became good with a gun and knife since he was in so many fights. In one fight he carelessly shot a soldier. This brought the U.S. government into the investigation. He fled, but this time people were looking for him so he headed for Colorado. He killed three more men before reaching Denver. He went by the cover up name of Tom Mackey. There he got into another fight and again had to flee. He stopped at Fort Griffin, Texas, were he met Big Nose Kate the only woman in his life. He also met Wyatt Earp there and he was a great influence on Doc’s life.
