Overcoming Fear Ernest Hemingway wrote this story to leave an unsure feeling inside his readers. In the story, Francis Macomber was shot and killed by his wife, Margot. Many things in the story make the crime seem intentional, but the author does not reveal the truth. Robert Wilson, the hunting leader, led Francis Macomber and his wife on an African safari. Hemingway describes Robert’s eyes as “cold” and “flat”, which indicates that he is not an emotional person. (Trudy Ring) This lack of emotion is one of the things that led to Margot’s cheating on Francis with him. The two men, in my opinion, are completely different. Francis basically lets his wife run all over him, and does not have a firm control over her.
