In simpler terms, capitalism allows for the rich to invest money or assets in order to obtain more wealth. While people understand this concept of capitalism, what they often fail to realize is that the origins of capitalism could quite possibly originate from the ideas of John Calvin. Although Calvin attempts to dissuade readers from capitalism, through discussion of predestination and the elect, he appears to have done the opposite in his work titled The Institutes of Christian Religion. ...
The way capitalism works it way into The Institutes of Christian Religion is through the concept that those who are chosen to be the elect will know that they are destined to heaven beforehand. ... ” (Calvin, 222) A misunderstanding of this statement perhaps, almost paves the way for capitalism. ... Finally, people could say that Calvin contributed to capitalism, but it is just a cop out.
