“Ideals Make Our Nation”
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible, with liberty and Justice for all” (Baer 1). Francis Bellamy a socialist editor and clergyman wrote the pledge of allegiance to reflect the views of his cousin, Edward Bellamy, author of Looking Backwards and other novels. The National Flag Conference in 1924 changed the Pledge’s words, “my Flag”, to “the Flag of the United States of America” (Baer 2). ... and Soviet Union, joined the chorus to put “one nation under God” into the pledge. ... The new Pledge read: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” (History 1). The Pledge of Allegiance is a pledge to our Nation. ... These words belong in the Pledge of Allegiance.
