... Salinger, the protagonist, Holden is going through an emotional fall because of his brother’s death and hardly notices. He goes through a journey throughout the story, one where he does find himself and does realize who the people are who he truly loves and cares for, even if it is subconsciously. The characters of Allie, Phoebe, and Jane are the people who Holden does care for and as they in their own ways try to catch him, he tries to protect their innocence and make sure they are always all right. These people all did eventually help him but the thing they did best was to let Holden see glimpses of who he truly is and to appreciate life, even if just slightly.
Allie Caulfield, he is Holden’s younger brother who passes away before the novel begins and the true cause for Holden’s long fall. Even though that is true, he is also a catcher to Holden; he is really the last ‘person’ that keeps Holden from hitting rock bottom in the setting of New York City.
