United States is Slow to Upgrade Airport Security Systems
More than two years after the hijackings that drove the United States to develop a new U. ... air security system, the government is still unable to decide on a new technology that would prevent terrorists from sneaking explosives onto airline cabins. Airport security officials have alerted airport directors and security screeners all over the country that terrorists may attempt to sneak bombs or explosives through the security checkpoints in such things as stuffed animals, cell phones or inside the linings of clothes and pillows. Several technology companies say they make systems that could prevent things like this from happening, but the companies say the Transportation Security Administration has been slow to review these products. ... security checkpoints do have some bomb-detecting machines, but they are not used routinely on every passenger, nor are they used to scan for explosives on passenger’s bodies. ...
