What is MIDI
MIDI – the Musical Instrument Digital Interface – is basically a standard communications tool or protocol specifically designed to control electronic musical instruments or related devices remotely. Specifically, it is a set of specifications or blueprint developed and agreed upon by the electronic music industry which is both a set of common language or commands for passing musically meaningful messages understood by each MIDI instrument, and also details for the specially designed hardware interface used to transmit and receive those commands, such as input and output ports and processing circuitry.
