“After Constantine had turned the Eagle counter to heaven’s course…the bird of God remained near Europe’s borders…it ruled the world…until that governing-changing-became my task”(Canto VI, Paradiso, 1-9). In these early lines of the sixth Canto is Paradiso, we see Dante refer to the Roman Empire in the symbol of an Eagle. The origin of this Empire, of course, dates back to Aeneas. Dante’s vision of the Roman Empire belongs to a divine plan. He believes that the Empire should be in control of everyday life and that the church’s duties are restricted to the reasoning of supernatural truths. Dante also believes that the church should acknowledge the Holy Roman Emperor. But in return, the Emperor should be inspired by the church in religious matters. The Emperor’s main objective is to look after human happiness, the well being of society, and he should be allowed to without meddling with the religious intricacies.
