... ” Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire and the door was closed on three centuries of Church persecution. ... It is important however to first summarise the course of the persecutions, the most influential of these being official persecution under specific emperors in the second and third centuries. While persecution existed from almost the birth of the Church these are generally localised and sporadic, related more to an uprising of the populace or unsympathetic governors.
The Roman Empire enters the second century under the rule of Trajan (98-117) who seems to view the Christians as no more than a nuisance whom, because they are rejecting the pagan gods of the empire need to be punished, but who are not causing enough concern to his rule to necessitate official persecution.
