Johns Coltrane is one of the most, if not the most influential jazz musician off all time. ... Throughout this essay we will look at Coltrane’s style of playing and how it progressed, along with what influenced his styles which in turn influenced other musicians.
Since the work Coltrane did before the 50’s has not been found, there is no person that has been noted as Coltrane’s early influences. ... The phrasing and tone of Coltrane highly resembles Dexter Gordon and Lester Young in some of his early recordings. ... At the time when Rollins and Coltrane got together, Rollins was already an established artist who helped to develop Coltrane. It could be believed that since Rollins was already established as an artist, Coltrane drew directly from Rollins’s style. Coltrane first recorded with Rollins, so the two might have sounded the same. ...
