Theme Human equality and the idea that under God all will be seen as equal is the theme behind the book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The author, Harriet Beecher Stowe, uses characters as one of the main sources to express the theme. Tom, the main character, is a hard working and deeply religious slave. Tom goes through many hardships and he shows that his faith is strong when he says, “I’ve lost everything in this world, and it’s clean gone, forever, and now I can’t lose heaven” (359). Tom’s Cabin is an object used to show that no matter how good a slave can be, their life won’t get much better until it is abolished. The Legree plantation is a perfect example of how slaves are shown inferior to whites. These examples help prove that slaves will only be equal in God’s eyes. Characters Tom starts off living one of the better lives that a slave can live. He is owned by a nice master. He has a decent cabin and a loving wife, Chloe. When Tom is sold to Haley, he learns that no matter how good of a worker and person you are, every slave has a price.
