Youth Trends in an American Society Have you ever wondered why you turned out the way you did? Do you see kids today and think to yourself, at the ripe old age of 20, “These kids today!” Well, you’re not alone. Suggested by one of my friends, I have decided to write about how the behavior of adolescence has changed in a major way compared to other generations. I have gathered information from many age groups- high school freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, college students, college graduates, parents, and grandparents. Most of my research has been done through observation, and I am not trying to target Britney with that opening quote, but if you don’t agree that a lyric like that isn’t teaching young girls to be young ladies, you might want to stop reading now. Let’s talk about fashion. The in-style trend these days that is most popular among girls ages 10-18 are cheerleader shorts. These shorts come with anything you want across the behind. After spending a weekend at my friend’s beach house during the summer, I knew almost every saying they came in. “Sexy”, “Baby Girl”, “(Beach) Hottie”, “Bad Girl”, and “Princess” were among the few to mention. I saw girls wearing them rolled up (as if they weren’t short enough already) with tiny little tank tops or just bikini tops. Things got even better when I spent an afternoon at White Marsh Mall observing at least 20 young girls with t-shirts that had disturbing slogans across them including one Playboy crop top, “Stop looking at my t-shirt”(writing across the breasts), and my very favorite, which happened to not be a t-shirt- “Bitch” hoop earrings worn by a girl who was probably around the age of 13 or 14. The observed t-shirts were usually worn with a tight pair of jeans, although the girl wearing “Stop looking at my t-shirt” wore her shirt with a plaid schoolgirl skirt pinned together by big safety pins, black fishnets, and platform boots. Whoever decided to let their “little girl” out of the house dressed like that must have been blind. The girls were among the worst dressed, although the boys I saw were a very close runner up. The boys were mostly dressed the same, long white short sleeved t-shirts with no writing, jeans that were pulled up to where the shirt had ended (at their lower thighs), lots of Timberland boots, gold chains, and bandanas.
