Believe it or not there are worse sections than these, and at least one third, if not more, of the book is filled with them. It's easy to see what about the work upset women so violently that they marched in front of the publisher's office in protest. Seven women and seven men die in the novel, but the men are killed in less than a paragraph and the women are tortured over a considerable length of pages in detail. Still, if you look at the documentation of real life serial killers our society has spawned; Richard Ramirez aka The Night Stalker who raped and dismembered female and elderly victims in Satan's name while hopped up on crack; Son of Sam, who shot women with brown hair point blank with a .45 because his neighbor's dog told him to; The San Jose Strangler, who, though of a younger age and different circumstance, carried out his murders much in the same gruesome fashion as Bateman; and of course the Zodiac Killer, who spread terror mindlessly, taunting the best detectives of his time and giving them clues, without ever being caught.
