John Donne (1572-1631) was born and reared a Catholic, and he was trained as a Catholic in religious polemic but he later became an Anglican and died as the Dean of St. ... Donne focussed his work around highly concentrated images, which often involved a dramatic contrast or are notable for their hard intellectualism. ... The speaker in Donne’s poetry is a theatrical character, constantly in different situations, and using different roles to suit the action. He can take on the role of a faithful lover as in “Lover’s Infiniteness”, or a person laughing at women’s unfaithfulness like in the song, “Goe, and catche a falling starre”, but the speaker in each of these poems is always John Donne himself. Each poem contains a strong sense of Donne’s own self-interest. ... Crofts, Donne: “Throughout his life…was a man self-haunted, unable to escape from his own drama, unable to find any window that would not give him back the image of himself. ... ” There is a drama and a unique situation in all the poems of John Donne. ... Donne shows a different side of him in each of his poems. In “The Good Morrow”, Donne appears as a man in love who is finding his own identity inside other person, along with a new and fully developed style. ... Donne sees himself in the reflection of his lovers’ eyes, obtaining an identity through her. ... However, in “The Sun Rising”, time disapproves of their lover and Donne later find his unit disturbed by the outside world. ... The sun reminds Donne of the outside world, one that he is aware of but wants no part in. ... In “The Sun Rising”, Donne contrasts his relationship to the sun; the sun is aged and has worldly things to do, while Donne and his lover appear timeless, immortal, and able to disregard the sun with a wink of an eye.
