Public Place Smoking Law

Public place smoking is an area of legislative interest and activity. To date, 34 states have introduced bills pertaining to public place smoking, including 19 from Connecticut. Nine bills in the Connecticut General Assembly propose repealing state preemption of municipal regulation of public place smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. Connecticut General Statutes Annotated Section 19a-342 supersedes and preempts the provisions of any municipal law or ordinance relative to smoking effective prior to, on or after October 1, 1993. ... Legislation prohibiting smoking in the presence of minors has also been a focus of proposed public place smoking regulations. Georgia House Bill 175, New York Assembly Bill 56, and New York Senate Bill 189 prohibit smoking in motor vehicles when minors are passengers.
