Glory (1989) The film took place in 1862. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw is the Colonel that leads the 54th Massachusetts regiment, the first black regiment in the north. Shaw is from Boston, Massachusetts where slavery is illegal. The black soldiers were ill equipped. They were denied socks, shoes, firearms, and received low pay. They knew that if they fought against the north they would be put to death if captured in uniform. The 54th regiments were used for manual labor and were not allowed to fight. They were teamed up with another black regiment, the 55th Massachusetts regiment. The two regiments took over a southern town and stole the supplies. Then they burned it down. Shaw first rejected the command to burn down the town, but was threatened to take his rank and regiment.
