Benjamin Banneker vs. Thomas Jefferson
I believe, based on my readings of Jefferson and Banneker, that Banneker is responding directly to Jefferson’s remarks in Notes on the State of Virginia. Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia show how White Americans in early America viewed blacks or people of color in respect to the treatment, mental capacity, and worthiness of blacks. ... Benjamin Banneker’s letter contains direct responses and indirectly refutes some of the claims made in Jefferson’s Notes.
Banneker submits evidence and directly addresses the assertion made about the black man’s ability to grasp scientific concepts.
