Oedipus in OedipusRex and Achilles in The Iliad are both noble individuals whose tragic deaths are facilitated by both fate and personal decisions. Oedipus, the righteous king unknowingly has a predetermined destiny that is set up by the actions he makes. Similarly, the great warrior Achilles’ fate is fixed, but not as definitive. Both, Oedipus and Achilles have a doomed destiny, but each individual must take action for their predetermined fate to occur.
The dignified Oedipus is a leader who the people trust and love, but with the help of destiny and personal decisions comes his demise. ... Even though Oedipus could not change his fate of killing his father and marrying his mother, the events leading up to these things could have been altered. For example, when Oedipus meets his father at the road he has the option of walking away instead of acting forcefully. ...
Unfortunately for Oedipus, regardless of his actions, his fate is inevitable.
