Before animal research ever came alone many people relied on folk remedies that were handed down from many genres. Unfortunately in some case’s diseases got worse and others in many times have proven to be very promising. As time went on many felt that there had to be something more that could be done for the spread of disease on man. Then one day Louis Pasteur, a scientist who used the Greeks method for observing animals inner structure (Vivisection) decided to try this on regular experiments, and this study was then used for cures for human diseases. In 1885 Pasteur discovered a vaccine for Rabies by infecting dogs and rabbits with the disease and with this allowed research to grow. MEASURES BEING TAKEN TO STOP ANIMAL RESEARCH During the 20th century the use of animals in research spread into psychology, drug testing food additives, and cosmetics. The laboratory animal became a symbol of medical progress. 20th century activists used many of the same methods to oppose the practice (activist groups, lectures, wrote literature etc) In the us there are two federal laws that govern the use of animals in experiments, one is the Health Research Extension Act of 1985. The other is the Animal Welfare Act . Before these federal laws the (NIH) had set out guidelines for the care and use of animals in its own labs. Based on the guide policies, These policies were becoming more and more strict. Laboratories were then having to be approved by committees and inspected, if any labs had a significant number of animals they were all required to have a vet. If the guidelines given Pg 1 Were followed the animals were well cared for and refusing to follow the guidelines given would lead to penalization. Even still with these guidelines it was not possible to keep up with all research going on in laboratories, therefore many of these animals were still being mistreated. It was than visible that cats and dogs were the species used most in medical experiments. But during the 1800's people started using these animals as companions. Then they became aware of vivisection and were horrified by it. These people organized a group and wanted to fight the spread of the practice. Led by Frances Power Cobbe they formed the Society for the Protection of Animals. The English Cruelty to Animals act of 1876 required experimenters to use pain killers and required laboratories to register and be inspected. WHAT WE CAN BENEFIT FROM ANIMAL RESEARCH Virtually all research for both humans and animals have been achieved through animal models and testing. Without animals for research we would not be able to have discovered cures and treatments for diseases that have killed numbers of people. An example of the benefits of animal research are the vaccinations created for previously deadly diseases and illnesses that had a very high fatality rate, such as several kinds of cancer. Some specific vaccinations is one that was a DNA vaccine for Hepatitis B. This disease attacks the liver and has an extremely high fatality rate.
