dSinha Vitoria and her family wondered like nomads in the hinterlands of Brazil. “…through the grinding poverty of Fabiano, a cowhand, his wife Shinha Votoria, their children and dogs…have been brutalized by their living conditions and by the authorities…” (King, 108). Votoria and Fabiano fled on foot from the Northeast to escape the drought that the land was facing. They walked many miles under the torturing sun and it seemed as if they were in hell. The static shot of the dry trees was a metaphor that the director used for the barren life these people had. The family walked without saying a word for the first fifteen minutes of the movie, while the camera was panning left in a circular motion, filming the dry rugged land, and the whole family looked hungry, dirty, and exhausted. There was no shade in the terrain and it seemed very hot. The film seemed overexposed or there were no light filters used because the terrain scenes were very bright, and dry; this gave us the sense of heat and hell. The whole family was carrying their belongings, but notably, Vitoria was carrying most of their belongings, including her youngest child. This showed her physical strength and presence as the central figure of the family because she was guiding the family through the land. Her central figure was expressed because she was walking in front of the family at the beginning of the film. When the family was hungry Vitoria killed their pet parrot in order to provide food for her family, because it was Vitoria’s nature to watch over her family when they were most in need. Finally when the family found a place where Fabiano could work as a cowhand for a rancher, Vitoria was the brain of the family because she knew exactly how much Fabiano had to earn for his labor. Fabiano was just the brute force that provided for the family, but Vitoria was the one who held the family together, managed part of their finances, and comforted the family when they were scared or feeling bad. For example, when Fabiano had to kill their dog, Vitoria comforted her little boys when they heard the gun shot ring she tried to cover their ears and hug them during this tragic scene. Vitoria kept the family together no matter what the situation was, for example, when her husband was thrown to jail, she waited for him for a complete day and night in front of the church with her children. When Fabiano got out she made him see the reality of their lives. She asked him how he could have spent the money they had been saving to complete their leather bed; Vitoria was the conscious of the family and she kept everyone in check, including her husband. Vitoria was needed in order for her family to survive because without her, the family would not eat, stay together, and have some dignity. The mother always held her dignity and dreamt of one day owning and sleeping on a leather bed like descent people.
