Racist Perceptions in Crime
By
James Arthro
Associating specific races or genders with specific crimes seems to be a crime itself. ... Perceiving a certain race to commit a crime creates a negative view on all people of that race. ... These facts would make anyone who approaches a homicide crime scene, where there was an African American victim, assume that the perpetrator is also African American. ... If there is a crime scene and no clue to who committed the crime they must assume, by using past statistics, who the most likely perpetrator is.
The use of demographic studies, however, could create a negative affect on all people of a race specified for a specific crime. An African American that is very successful and wealthy could be targeted and suspected for a crime just because his race is statistically more likely to commit that type of crime.
