... Yoga, a mind and fitness exercise, is used in many instances as an alternative medicine to assist in curing a wide variety of mental and physical health-related problems. ...
Yoga, practiced in India over five thousand years ago, was seen as a type of spiritual discipline in the Hindu and Buddhist religions. At present, there are many forms of yoga, and each form serves a specific purpose in relieving the mind and body of impurities. Directed towards attaining a higher consciousness and liberation from ignorance, suffering and rebirth, yoga has three major cultural branches -- Hindu, Buddhist, and Jaina yoga. Of these cultural branches, the most diversified branch is Hindu yoga. A few of it’s most important forms include Hatha-Yoga (“Forceful Yoga”), Karma Yoga (“Yoga of Action”), Jnana-Yoga (“Yoga of wisdom”), and Bhakti-Yoga (“Yoga of Devotion”) (YREC). As Yoga entered the West in 1893, it went through a unique type of change. Hatha-yoga, taught most in the West, has been tailored to suit the needs of the countries people. (YREC)
In association with curing the needs of people, yoga has effectively been proven to reduce mental health related issues such as anger and violence. For example, a study conducted in the year 2000 illustrated that yoga had a significantly positive impact on the behavior adolescents convicted with sex offenses.
