... It would be pitch black while my cousins and I would tell scary stories, using only one form of light, that of a flashlight. ... That was all we knew and all I knew about flashlights, that batteries made them work and bad batteries didn’t, that is, before I would learn how a flashlight truly works in my third semester of college.
I was first introduced to the idea of how a bulb lights in Chapter 3 of The Automobile volume 3. I learned how Electric circuits play the leading role in the functioning of any light bulb whether it be in an automobile or a handy flashlight. ...
From Pretest 8, it is highlighted that my knowledge on how circuits work to make a bulb light, is quite uneducated, guessed and left to uncertainty. My initial response (not asked on paper), was that batteries of the right size are placed inside a flashlight, and when tightly inside with the springs on that batteries flat (negative) side, the switch is able to slide up, turning on to make the light work - somehow. When asked in the pretest how a single wire and battery could light a bulb, I left a big blank because I truly, did not know why it wouldn’t. ... 1 allowed me to gain the beginning concepts of circuits and how both positive and negative ends of a battery must connect to a bulb’s thread and tip in order to make it light.
