The Bean Trees Essay "Some people weave burlap into the fabric of our lives, and some weave gold thread. Both contribute to make the whole picture beautiful and unique." -Anonymous. Everyone who matures into a better person is influenced, in some way or another by other people. In her novel, The Bean Trees, Barbara Kingsolver effectively demonstrates how this is true. Some of her characters weave the gold, and others weave the burlap into other character’s lives. This novel is about a small town girl named Marietta, who has the desire to move out of her home state of Kentucky for fear of dropping out of school and ending up pregnant like the majority of the girls in her town. She goes on a journey to start a new life and re-names herself Taylor, after ending up in Taylorville. She goes to a bar where she is left with a baby whom she later names Turtle. Taylor and Turtle end up in Tucson, Arizona, where she moves in with some new friends and starts her new life. Taylor influences the new people she meets, while they do the same for her. She encounters gold and burlap woven into the fabric of her life through positive and negative influences from other people. Kingsolver demonstrates through Taylor’s journey, that the road to success can’t be achieved alone. Through out the novel, Taylor interacts with many different people who have an impact on her life for the better, or for the worse. These negative and positive influences from the people that she meets all come together to make her an overall better person. Estevan, a married Guatemalan refugee whom Taylor falls in love with, has a large positive impact on Taylor’s life “’…I think you talk so beautifully. Every since I met you I’ve been reading the dictionary at night and trying to work words like “constellation” and “scenario” in to the conversation.’ He laughed…’I have always thought you had a wonderful way with words,’ he said.
