The electoral college was originally formed to make elections more indirectly democratic; it has caused many problems in several elections but it has always been an American tradition. In the 1876 election it was especially troublesome and ineffective. 2-3. The Electoral College is a cause of turmoil every four years, as it gives too much power to the states in determining electors in the crucial presidential election. 3. Both problems occurred in the crucial election of 1876. 6. Republican Hayes had 4,036,298 popular votes, while Democrat Tilden had 4,300,590. 7. It was a time of crisis with the South struggling against Reconstruction, the numerous Grant scandals, and the panic of 1873 occuring all at the same time.
