The author shows humane sides of her father who is also a victim of the same calamity as Eveline, in her reminiscense he reads ghost stories for her when she´s sick and puts on her mother´s bonnet in a picnic with the family, to make the children laugh. ... Then Eveline rises in panic, determined to find her happiness with Frank.
