Long Essay Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 in a small town. He was born in a time in Europe when people had hang-ups and were screw-ups about sex and sexuality. He became an originator of a new way of thinking about mind and motivations. Even though he was a scientist he didn’t do any experiments. Freud became the first person to work with people that had problems, however they were functioning in life, they were neurotic! He first studied under a French neurologist named Charcot, who was treating women for paralyses by using hypnotism to treat “hysterics.” Many of his own patients had the same problems, and Freud felt that many of the patient’s suffering came from their unconscious, which is how he derived his psychoanalysis theory. Freud found that the ideas in his patients had some sexual content, and that their neuroses had a sexual origin. We can view this today as childhood sexual abuse. Later on he formulated his theory about childhood sexual abuse and interpretation of dreams.
