Was the American Revolution economically, socially, or politically a revolution? ... The American Revolution is the point in the history of America when the English colonies declared and won their independence from the monarchial government of England, and became what we now call America. The reasons for independence, as given in 1776 by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, are that the English government had abused its powers over its American colonies and the inhabitants of these violated colonies had an obligation to “abolish it and institute a new Government. ... Although the American republic, as a result, replaced the English monarchy, the term “revolution” does not effectively describe the social, economic and political situations that America encountered as a result of the American Revolution.
The American Revolution did bring about many changes in the lives, finance and government of the American people. The most obvious change would be that of the complete replacement of the previous English monarchy with the current American republic. ... Jameson in his work, “The Revolution as a Social Movement,” that is a result of the American Revolution is “the immediate or gradual abolition of slavery” (Jameson p 66bl). In 1774, The Continental Congress, speaking for all of the American colonies, severed completely its relationship with the trans-Atlantic slave trade, therefore discontinuing the influx of African slaves to America. ... Before the American Revolution, English policy forbade western expansion, as seen in the Proclamation Line of 1763. ... A practice used by elites before and after the American Revolution. Although there were political, economic and social changes to the lives of the American people as a result of the American Revolution, these changes can hardly be called revolutionary.
