If it is possible to have a life text…one that summarizes the whole of Christian life…this would be my life text. Matt. 11:28 Understand this…get into his audience. Who was he speaking to? Peasants, fisherfolk from the hills of Galilees. And they were sincere believers. This is not a text for unbelievers! Most use this for evangelism. Originally this was spoken to devout people who would be in the synagogue on the Sabbath day, memorized scriptures, kept the Mosaic law, … These are the people that Jesus spoke this too. When he is talking about weary and heavy laden, He is talking about weary and heavy laden believers essentially. Why were they weary and heavy laden? They were absorbed with the Pharisee’s teaching. The Pharisee’s weren’t like a cult. They were a group of businessmen., rich businessmen. And they wanted to go to the limit of answering the basic questions of life. And they did succeed as far as human beings can go. What were the questions they were trying to answer? All of us asks this. How can a person be right with God? Not how can I go to heaven. But when I get up in the morning, between my heart and God I know everything is A.O.K. And when you go to bed at night, you know between you and God everything is right. How can a person be right with God? But they also were asking How can a person be accepted by God? This is different because it means I am received, I am worthy to stand before God. I can look God in the eye and not only know there is no condemnation, but I know He welcomes me. It isn’t just that He pats me on the head and says OK, but that He says come and sit beside me. He wants fellowship with me. I’m His friend, and He’s my friend. I’m in the “in crowd” with God. I’m accepted. And they were also asking How can you know that God loves you? Can any person go through life knowing that God loves you? Or is he frowning at you? Is he mad at us? Can I have a settled know, not a know today but not sure tomorrow, that God loves me?
