Physical Attributes Thomomys Mazama or more commonly Western Pocket Gopher is infamous for strategically referred to, as disassembling gardens. Through the use of it’s four incisors or hardened teeth they cut away all roots blocking their path while skillfully removing the dirt with their large fore paws and sharp claws. Depending on where the Pocket Gopher lives also determines the length of their claws, if the dirt is hard and filled with clay the longer the claws, while in farmland with the much softer soil it only requires smaller claws. These gophers received their common name from extended cheek pockets that run from the front of the mouth to the shoulders. Using their forepaws the Pocket Gopher can shovel food into its cheeks.
