Brent Dodd Many times there are people that go for this or there are people that are against it but I think that there shouldn’t be abortions. life begins when the fetus possesses a soul from the moment of conception and thus its life should not be terminated. First there exists another viewpoint that is missed with that argument, one based on the vagueness surrounding the status of the fetus itself. Ultimately, the concept of the “soul” of the unborn, or even the question of whether a fetus clearly has a right to life becomes irrelevant. Second the real question hinges upon whether or not society has the data necessary to make informed decisions regarding abortion, and as the negative is evidently the case, society hasn’t the moral justification to allow them at all. And third religion notwithstanding, abortion is morally impermissible. The first point to make is the mother’s life rights, however, they should not be immediately overridden by any life right of the fetus. Surely it will be said, though, “But if the fetus has a life right, why should we arbitrarily ignore it in favor of the mother’s?” I haven’t any simple answer to this query other than to say that a mostly arbitrary decision must be made in these situations, and the mother, being the only individual involved cognizant of her situation, is best suited to make that rather painful decision. In any case, one life will invariably end in those situations, so no evil is done by formulating the standards. That being established, what makes abortion morally impermissible? The fact that the majority come as the result of careless action fails to impact greatly the morally acceptability of the procedure itself. The standard conservative argument contends that the fetus is a person, as it possesses its own independent human genetic code. This contention is crucial, as it points out that the fetus is indeed a distinct and separate life, dependent on the mother through no fault of its own. It is surely innocent, but the question of whether is has a right to life still remains unanswered. Certainly, a dog may be innocent, but dogs may be killed for a variety of reasons which society views as legitimate. Yet here we are speaking of human life, a noteworthy distinction.
