The abolition of slavery as an institution in Brazil was a monumental moment in Brazil’s storied history. ... The debate centers around numerous factors, external and internal, and which of these set of factors played the most critical role in the eventual abolition of slavery in Brazil. I will detail the many issues surrounding the abolition of slavery in Brazil and come to my own conclusion as to what happened. I will argue that the most important factor in abolishing slavery in Brazil was the Brazilian judges upholding the laws which protected the rights of slaves.
