Schoolies and Surfers – Paradise or a ‘Blur’? Teenagers from all different walks of life, it seems forever have followed in the yearly custom of flocking to Surfers Paradise for 3 weeks of partying, drinking, drug taking and experimentation. And while the police and people alike of Queensland may chastise them for their rebellious risk-taking and the havoc it causes, they seem to forget that this long running tradition is the single event that generates the greatest income for them each year. And so, this makes many question – What is it about schoolies that has made it such a long running custom and rogue cultural icon?
