Gore-Bush 2000 Presidential Election

     The 2000 presidential election will be remembered throughout history. ... Bush and the Vice-President at that time, Al Gore. ... In the election, Nader received about 3 percent of the vote, and Buchanan and Hagelin each got less than 1 percent (Abramowitz). The real competition was between Gore and Bush, with votes so close, it took recounts and court hearings to help in the process of determining the next leader of the country. Three weeks after the election, a president still was not established.
     The countrys official Election Day, the first Tuesday in November, fell on November 7th, 2000. ... The race between Bush and Gore was extremely close. Gore led in the popular vote, but the popular vote does not directly decide the winner of the election; it determines the delegates who will represent each state in the Electoral College and officially elect the president. ... By the time reports were in from most states, Gore had a narrow lead over Bush in electoral votes. ... It became obvious that the election depended upon who received Floridas 25 electoral votes.
     Early in that evening, television newscasters predicted that Gore would win Florida. ... As the evening wore on, official tallies from the state showed an increasing percentage of votes for Bush. As a result, the television networks retracted their original prediction and declared Bush the winner in Florida. Gore called Bush to concede the election. ... The networks announced that the vote in Florida was too close to predict, and Gore called Bush to retract his concession.
     On the morning of November 8, many people were startled to learn that the presidential election remained in doubt.
